Madeira
Sunrise , Pico do Areeiro.
I spent a little time in Madeira recently. Took a camera/tripod with me for the gardens, but ended up using the phone camera mostly. Such a beautiful place to visit, with lots of nooks and crannies to explore, better again if your brother has hired a car and doesn't mind negotiating the narrow streets or those winding mountain climbs around blind bends! In this fashion, driving to Pico do Areeiro before sunrise was well worth the effort. We were a little surprised by the cold temps and wild gusts around the peak but delighted when the sun sent its rays upwards through the clouds, thousands of people scattered about in silence as the dawn broke.
Natural Saltwater Pool, Seixal.
The natural bathing pools on the coasts were a real treat. We enjoyed a few of these, probably our favourite was Seixal on the northern coast. The volcanic rock and the crystal clear waters were quite a combination.
Miadourohas do Cabo Girao.
The glass-floored Miradourohas do Cabo Girao on the south coast has magnificent views of the imposing sea cliffs below.
Levada do Rei,Sao Jorge.
The island has many stunning Levada trails which run alongside irrigational channels that carry water down from the lush mountains towards farmlands and villages. These provide an attractive array of organised hiking trails that traverse the misty heartlands of the countryside, giving one a chance to work off any indulgence from the culinary delights that the island offers! Check out the marvellous Restaurante Santo António in Camarras dos Lobos for its friendly atmosphere and the delicious local specialities !!
Entrance to Fabrica Santa Antonio on the right, for marvellous Madeira cake!
Funchal, Madeira’s capital city has lots to see, not least of which are the fantastic gardens, historic streets , galleries, bars and restaurants.
